Frequently Asked Questions about Criminal Defense in Ewing Township, NJ

What happens when I am arrested?

After you have been arrested, you will likely be taken to the police station to be processed, which includes being photographed and fingerprinted. While in police custody, investigators may choose to ask you questions after having read you your Miranda rights. Depending on the circumstances of your case, the police may release you after you have been processed and advise you of the date and time of your first appearance in court. Within 48 hours of your arrest, you will make an appearance before a judge who will advise you of the charges against you and either set conditions for your pretrial release or order you held in police custody pending your trial.

The prosecutor offered me a plea deal, should I take it?

You should never agree to a plea deal on your criminal charges without first reviewing the offer and the facts of your case with an Ewing Township criminal defense attorney. Your attorney can review the evidence with you and advise you of potential defenses you may be able to raise against your charges. An attorney may also be able to challenge the admissibility of certain evidence and weaken the state’s case to get charges reduced or dropped entirely, or to be able to negotiate a more favorable plea deal. Your attorney can advise you when a plea offer represents a highly favorable outcome in your case.
